App Uses Speakers to Determine Phone’s Position in a Vehicle

Researchers from Stevens Institute of Technology and Rutgers University have developed a sophisticated smart phone application intended to curb distracted driving. The app uses the car’s speakers to determine if the phone user is in the driver’s seat. This is an improvement on earlier designs which could not differentiate drivers from passengers. The technology is still being developed and could be a long way from implementation.
