Shiley size 8 adult tracheostomy tubes have been recalled by Covidien because there exists a risk that these tubes can leak. The items, which are placed into an individual’s windpipe in order to extract fluids from the lungs and trachea, also have an inner and outer cannulae which can become disconnected. The Food and Drug Administration is warning doctors to replace the items as soon as possible in patients who already have these tubes. If such replacement isn’t advisable immediately, the patient should be carefully monitored.
