Blind Pedestrians Endangered by New York City Sidewalk Changes

Posted on August 7, 2012

As New York City has made numerous improvement to pedestrian and bicycle safety, one demographic appears to have been been adversely affected:  visually impaired persons.  Many blind residents have made a mental map of their area, but with an influx of construction projects, bike lanes, and pedestrian plazas, it’s become increasingly difficult for such people to navigate safely.  Another troubling issue is the fact that quiet hybrid cars and an increase in bicycles has made it impossible for blind persons to distinguish when they are about to be brought into the path of a commuter.
