A recent tragedy in which an individual on a bicycle was killed has cast a light on bike collisions in Berkeley, California. The city has an 8% bicycle commuter rate among residents, one of the highest such in the entire country, with an attendant 819 bike crashes between 2005 and 2010. Bicycle boulevards have been created to help improve safety among such commuters, but safety advocates would like to see additional measures taken, such as reductions in speed limits and installing stop signs in place of traffic lights.
