A new article from the Poughkeepsie Journal discusses the continuing epidemic of texting while driving. Distracted driving can be attributed to more than 3,000 deaths last year. Even with a new, stricter law passing in New York, distractions reportedly continue to be commonplace. The increase of one point on an individual’s driver’s license (3 points this year, up from 2 last year) has not given all drivers a large enough incentive to drive without using a hand-held device. Drivers continue to drive while distracted despite studies which show that distracted drivers are four times more likely to be in an accident than a driver who is not distracted.
