Salmonella Threat Leads to Recall of Bulk Romaine Lettuce

Posted on July 9, 2012

Another hazardous organism potentially making an appearance in a food product has led to the recall of said item.

Pacific International Marketing announced the recall, which pertains to bulk Romaine Lettuce.  19 cases in total fall within the scope of the recall, and each of these cases was sold in Nevada or right here in California.  Vons and Pavilions stocked these items from July 2 through July 4, and each of the heads of lettuce recalled will have the word “Safeway” found on their red twist tie.

The recall was necessitated following a field test that unearthed the presence of salmonella.  For healthy individuals, salmonella threatens to cause nausea, fever, abdominal pain, and more, but it’s potentially fatal to the elderly, young people, or anyone who has a compromised immune system.  It can also lead to arthritis, endocarditis, or arterial infections should the organism reach an individual’s bloodstream.

Consumers who think they have the recalled item have two options:  they can simply toss out the Romaine Lettuce outright or bring it back to the store from which it was bought, at which point a refund will be issued.

The bulk product that could be contaminated with the salmonella has 12EASROM182 as its code.
