Both natural disasters and recalls have hindered Toyota’s sales in previous years, but they seem to have made a comeback in 2012. They surpassed the reigning champion, GM, in sales for the first half of 2012. Contributing to Toyota’s success are increased sales in China and Southeast Asia and U.S. sales recovery following extensive recalls. Toyota sold 300,000 more vehicles than GM in the first half of the year- about 4.97 million-making it unlikely that GM can surpass them in the second half of 2012.
