Ice Cream Bars and Pints Recalled by Arctic Zero For Allergen Risk

Posted on July 9, 2012

The presence of an undeclared allergen has once again led to the recall of a food product.

The recall was announced by the Escondido, California-based Arctic Zero and concerns a variety of chocolate dipped bars and pints of ice cream.  The former was available in a four pack and the latter could be bought in a 16 ounce pint.  Recalled chocolate bars are Chocolate and Vanilla flavored and Strawberry and Orange Cream flavored.  The pints were available in Strawberry, Coffee, Mint Chocolate, Vanilla Maple, Pumpkin Spice, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Chocolate, and Cookies and Cream.

The recall only concerns items sold prior to February of this year.  Before that time, the product labels did not list whey protein, an ingredient, as being derived from milk.  As such, the ice cream is designated by the FDA as containing an undeclared allergen.  Anyone who is sensitive to dairy products would be in danger of experiencing an adverse reaction upon eating the ice cream.

After February, a new label illustrating whey protein’s relation to milk was affixed to items, and thus any ice cream after that date is not being recalled.  Thankfully, no one has reported becoming sick due to the milk allergen in these products.

The items were available at Winn Dixie, Publix, Sprouts, Whole Foods, and other retailers.  Anyone concerned about the milk threat should bring the items back to the store for a refund.
