Since January 1 and up to June 30 of this year, there have been 29 deaths resulting from 24 collisions along highways in Nova Scotia. Seven of those crashes were likely caused by distraction. Motor Vehicle Act Section 100D(1) bans drivers from using handheld cellphones or texting behind the wheel. There have been 46 charges that have stemmed from this legislation since 2012 began. The fine which comes from using a handheld cellphone while driving is $169.91. To avoid citations, police recommend that drivers use Bluetooth devices or a speaker phone.
