The threat of listeria has led to the recall of yet another food item.
The recall was announced by the Woodhaven, New York-based Mexicali Cheese Corporation, and it has since been followed by a warning from the Commissioner of New York State Agriculture. That individual is warning people away from two products, namely Mexicali Queso Fresco Mexicano, Mexican Style Fresh Cheese, and Acatian Queso Fresco, Fresh Cheese.
These queso products were only available in the New York metro. The cheese came in a 14 ounce tub made of plastic which contained a code of 071512 and a plant number of 36-0128.
Sampling taken during an inspection by the Division of Dairy Control and Milk Services and later tested by the Food Laboratory unearthed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the items. The manufacturer was told of the problem shortly thereafter and announced a recall.
No one has reportedly become ill as a result of consuming this item, but the threat of listeria should not be underestimated. Fever, nausea, and diarrhea are typical in healthy people that get infected, but elderly people, young people, and those with weakened immune systems are in danger of the infection becoming serious and possibly deadly.
Anyone who thinks they purchased either item is being advised to abstain from eating it.
