Officials Discuss How Motorcycle Helmets Save Lives, Money

In a new report, motorcycle enthusiasts and doctors alike discuss how important it is to wear a helmet while astride the back of a motorcycle.  A doctor from St. Elizabeth Health Center even explains in graphic detail what he has to do should a traumatic head injury occur.  It involves a drill that is used to give doctors access to a patient’s brain.  Aside from the physical damage, there are also economic factors to consider.  Although $3 billion was likely saved in 2010 thanks to helmets, that number would increase to $4.5 million if all riders wore such a device, according to the NHTSA and CDC.
