Commercial Drivers Targeted by New Illinois Cellphone Ban

Posted on July 27, 2012

Illinois has strengthened its laws against distracted driving with a new ban on handheld cell phone use by commercial drivers. The new law, which was proposed by the Secretary of State and goes into effect on January 1, 2013, also makes texting by commercial truck drivers a serious offense. The Secretary of State pushed for the new restriction in an effort to enhance highway safety. He had previously spearheaded the enactment of Illinois’ first laws banning cell phone use while driving, which took effect in 2010.
