Florida Turns Down Bike Lane Proposal Over Safety Concerns

Posted on July 26, 2012

Concerns about safety have led the state of Florida to turn down a proposal that would have permitted people on bicycles to share the road with motor vehicles on a bridged section of State Road 417 above Lake Jesup.  Even though bicyclist fatalities have fallen in recent years, legislators still aren’t confident that a cyclist wouldn’t make some kind of error or that motorists would treat them with respect.  Some worry that bike lanes don’t improve safety, while others say many drivers are simply ignorant of the laws.
