A recall of an item has been expanded to include hundreds of thousands of additional units.
The products in question are Arctic Zone ice packs and Cryofreeze Ice/Hot packs, items that were imported from China by the Toronto, Canada-based California Innovations. The items can be stored in freezers and are meant to keep items cold, or hot in the case of the Cryofreeze products. The Cryofreeze packs comes in a small and large gel pack, a two cell pack, and two different three cell packs that have either rectangular or square pouches. The Arctic Zone product is 4 inches tall, 6.25 inches wide, and has a blue opaque wrapper with an igloo logo.
At issue is the fact that the items could leak their gel when they sustain some type of damage. This gel may possibly be made up of ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol, and anyone who consumes such chemicals in sufficiently high amounts could face an illness.
Around 880,000 units have been recalled, up from just over 300,000 affected by a January recall. The products were available through a number of retail outlets across the country from July 2007 to December 2008. They cost from $5 to $28 depending on the product. Anyone with the item in their possession should cease usage and get in touch with a waste disposal facility to obtain instructions on proper disposal. California Innovations has stated that they’ll only give out $5 or $6 refunds.
