At the request of the United States Department of Agriculture, an estimated 400 pounds of Keoki’s Lau Lau pork products are being recalled due to a potential listeria contamination. The recalled kalua brand pork products are packaged in 12 and 48 ounce tubs. They were packaged at Keoki’s Lau Lau processing facilities in Kalihi, Hawaii. This recall has been issued in response to the results of a recent product sample test conducted by inspectors working on behalf of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. The Food Safety and Inspection Service employees originally discovered the potential listeria contamination during a routine sample monitoring test, and follow up testing confirmed the original finding. Products affected by this recall include Keoki’s Kalua Brand Pork packaged in 12 and 48 ounce tubs bearing batch numbers 546 or 552 and establishment number “EST. 12429” inside the United States Department of Agriculture’s official seal of inspection. They were produced on May 24 and May 25 of 2012 and distributed for sale at retail establishments throughout the state of Hawaii. Consumers in possession of these potentially contaminated pork products are advised to discard them without eating them, or return them to their original place of purchase for a full refund. Listeria contamination has been known to cause severe or even deadly illness in people with compromised or weakened immune systems such as children, the elderly, and people living with HIV or AIDS.
