IC CESB School Buses Get Recalled for Faulty Wheelchair Lift

Posted on June 15, 2012

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has posted a recall notice on its website for a group of vehicles produced by  Navistar.  They have issued a recall for certain models of IC CESB School Buses manufactured in 2007, 2009, and 2011. A total of four buses are affected by this particular recall.

These buses have a wheelchair lift produced by Braun.  The lifts are of the Century-2 or Vista-2 model.  Over time, these lifts may sustain misalignment in the roll stop latches should the lift be used extensively. The result of this defect may cause a wheelchair to fall from the elevated platform.  This happens because the latches themselves can bend in such a way that they won’t hold the roll stop in place the way that they should.  Thus, if someone rolls over this roll stop, it won’t impede their progress and they can be injured by falling to the ground below.

The good news is that all of the buses that are affected have reportedly been fixed by authorized dealers already.  Navistar has stated that, as a result, notification is not necessary at this time.  Should any consumers still have question or concerns, however, they are being advised to call Navistar directly.
