Bowflex Dumbbells With Weight Selectors Recalled Over Failure Risk

Posted on June 13, 2012

Nautilus Incorporated, a company based out of Vancouver, Washington, has announced a recall of their Bowflex SelectTech 1090 dumbbells due to a possible injury resulting from faulty weight selector dials.  The items, which were sold in pairs, allow the user to select a weight between 10 and 90 pounds which they can then lift.  The dumbbells are black and the handles say “Bowflex.”  The weights come in a cradle, the bottom of which will have a serial number that can be identified by turning the cradle over when it does not have weights on it.  Affected models will have a four digit code between 1111 and 1136 following the letters MAG.

A total of around 17,000 sets of weights are affected by the recall.  Should the weight selectors on the dumbbells fail, the weight plates threaten the user’s healthy because they can fall out of the unit. There have in fact been 16 reported instances of this very event taking place, with a falling weight injuring a consumer on three separate occasions.

Consumers are being asked to stop using the product, which was sold on the Nautilus website and at various sporting goods retailers across the country.  They sold for around $600 between May and August of last year.  Affected purchasers can contact Nautilus directly to obtain a repair kit.  This will be provided at no cost to the consumer.
