Arboc recalls 57 transit buses due to emergency exit defect

Posted on June 6, 2012

Nearly 60 transit buses have been recalled at the request of the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration due to a potential roof hatch defect. The transit buses affected by this recall, 57 in all, are model years 2011 and 2012 Spirit of Mobility and Freedom buses manufactured between April of 2011 and March of 2012 by Arboc Specialty Vehicles, Limited Liability Corporation. These buses were equipped with Prolo brand roof escape hatches that may not meet federal safety guidelines regulating the window retention and release and emergency exit specifications for transit buses. The friction between the escape hatch’s nylon rear pop up support and rear plate assemblies may create an increased resistance causing the escape hatch to require a greater amount of force to open than prescribed by national commercial passenger vehicle safety laws. The buses passengers may have difficulty opening the escape hatch as a result, increasing the likelihood that one or more of the transit bus passengers may be injured in the event of an accident or other emergency situation, necessitating the use of the vehicle’s emergency exits. Currently Arboc Specialty Vehicles has yet to announce a recall schedule indicating when the transit bus manufacturer will begin notifying affected consumers of the potential safety issue, but the official recall notice states that the company will be shipping repair kits to consumers in possession of these affected buses as well as authorized Arboc dealerships, where the roof escape hatch will be modified to meet federal safety requirements at no additional cost.
