Listeriosis Concerns Lead to Recall of Dole Fresh Lettuce Products

Posted on June 25, 2012

The potential for consumer illness has led to the recall of yet another product.

This time, the recall concerns a variety of salad items that were available at various stores, namely Kroger and Walmart.  The recall was announced by Dole Fresh Vegetables.  The specific items that could pose a threat are Kroger Fresh Selections Greener Supreme, Kroger Fresh Selections Leafy Romaine, and Wal-Mart Marketside Leafy Romaine.  A total of 1,077 cases have been recalled among the three products in question.

At issue is the fact that these items have the potential to contain Listeria monocytogenes.  This could cause a consumer to become infected with listeriosis, a condition that could lead to aches and pains, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea.  The infection is more dangerous and potentially fatal in those with weakened immune systems.

The recall was initiated once an agency in North Carolina submitted the Marketside Leafy Romaine to a test that turned up the aforementioned Listeria monocytogenes.  All products that could have the potential infection have a use by date of June 19.  They were sold in six states on the Eastern side of the United States.  Those states were Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky.

No one has reported becoming ill as a result of consuming this item.  Since the use by date has now passed, Dole is stressing caution among retailers, asking them to simply doublecheck that no version of the items in question is still on store shelves.
