California Officials Warn of Botulism Risk Posed by Various Soup Items

Posted on June 12, 2012

Consumers are being advised not to eat a certain food product because of the adverse effect the items could have on consumer health.

The announcement was made by the California Department of Public Health and concerns a number of soup products made by the Malibu-based One Gun Ranch and the Santa Barbara-based Organic Soup Kitchen.  The soups from the former are Heirloom Tomato Fennel Gaspacho, Freddy’s Firegrilled Meatballs, Campfire Kitchen Cauliflower, Ossian’s Pumpkin Stew, and Sequoia’s Skinny Spiced Coconut, Parsnip, and Turmeric Soup.  The soups from the latter are Curried Potato Leek, Mediterranean Chipotle Chili, Fire Roasted Yam, Tomato Bean and Wild Herb, and Curry Lentil Bisque.

The items from One Gun Ranch were available for sale between May 13 and June 3.  They came in 16 ounce glass jars and were sold at the Farmers Market located at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Swarthmore Avenue in Pacific Palisades.

The Organic Soup Kitchen soups were available from June 6 of last year to May 6 of this year.  They were available at the Calabasas and Studio City Farmers Markets.

At issue is the fact that these items could be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum.  There was an error in the production process that could have caused this, and if users ingest this botulism toxin, they could become ill or die.

No reported injuries have occurred as of yet.  Consumers are being advised to discard the soup and wash their hands immediately after doing so.
