US Postal Service’s Best Drivers Offer Tips on How to Drive Safe

Posted on May 24, 2012

If you’re looking for tips on how to stay safe while out on the roads, you could do a lot worse than listening to those persons who have a million miles of safe driving under their belts.

The Postal Service has thousands of employees who have met that impressive benchmark; 7,065 postal carriers since 2005 to be exact.  That number is unmatched by any other business out there employing a fleet of drivers.  Of those thousands of employees, not one has had an accident in over a million miles and thirty years of service.

The tips that they offer range from the simple to slightly more complex.  First and foremost, postal carriers are expected to drive defensively.  A less-aggressive driving habit can force you to be ready for an unexpected obstacle.  Along with this driving style, drivers should always obey posted laws, use turn signals when appropriate, and be courteous to all other drivers and pedestrians.

Postal carriers also advise thinking ahead to potential accidents that might present themselves.  Be ready to take evasive action, for instance, if you were to get cut off in traffic, and have a plan in place to prevent disaster.  You should also be one car length back from the vehicle in front of you for every ten miles per hour driven.

One final safety tip?  Turn off the phone.  Not texting or talking on a cell phone while driving can go a long way toward ensuring your safety.
