Transmission defect prompts Georgetown RV recall

Posted on May 11, 2012

At the request of the National Highway Safety Administration, Forest River Incorporated has announced a voluntary recall for nearly 1,500 recreational vehicles due to a potential transmission defect. Model year 2010 to model year 2012 Georgetown Recreation Vehicles constructed with a stripped Ford chassis manufactured between February 2010 and November 2011 may have been equipped with a gear shifter cable that may become detached from the steering column mounted transmission control selector arm. If the cable becomes detached, the instrument panel gear display may indicate an incorrect transmission gear position, reporting that the vehicle’s transmission is in the first gear position at all times, regardless of the actual gear selected. Transmission gear position confusion can lead to a car being parked without being put into the proper gear, increasing the risk that the car will roll away uncontrolled, potentially causing an accident or colliding with a pedestrian before it can be brought to a stop. Though it has not yet announced an official recall schedule, Forest River Incorporated plans to begin informing owners of affected recreational vehicles of the potential safety issue in the near future. Affected vehicles will be accepted at authorized dealerships, where the transmission control selector arm and gear shifter cable will be replaced if required for free. Consumers seeking more information about this recall can contact the National Highway Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline and reference campaign identification number 12V200000.
