Recently, the Tennessee Department of Transportation made public its plan to increase pedestrian safety at several busy intersections in the state by installing five crosswalks. The intended locations for these new crosswalks are all situated along Fort Campbell Boulevard, also known as US Highway 41A, and State Route 12, also known as Ashland City Highway. Several safety incidences involving pedestrians have occurred along these routes between 2007 and 2011, including six fatal accidents. The locations of these new crosswalk installations have been determined by a Road Safety Audit Review launched by the Tennessee Department of Transportation in June 2011.
The safety improvement project includes: setting up traffic signs warning pedestrians along US Highway 41A in both directions and adjusting five existing intersections with traffic signals to include crosswalks, curb ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act , and pedestrian signals that countdown the safe crossing period, including the intersections at US Highway 41A and Peachers Mill, Lafayette/Sinclair and US Highway 41A, Concord/West Concord and US Highway 41A, Cunningham and US Highway 41A, and the intersection at Quinn and US Highway 41A.
