After conferring with the United States Food and Drug Administration, FunFresh Foods Incorporated, a food product manufacturer, has issued a voluntary recall for a single production lot of FunFresh Foods World Berries Organic “Cacao Nibs” in six ounce packages because these products may have been contaminated with the Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria, or E. coli. Children, the elderly, and other consumers with weakened or compromised immune systems if they consume an E. coli contaminated food product may experience Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, a form of kidney failure that can result in death. Adults with healthy immune systems could experience diarrhea, often resulting in bloody stools, a condition that can last for a week or more. The recall affects an estimated 500 units of Cacao Nibs, 263 of which have already been returned to the manufacturer. These products were distributed to retail stores throughout the United States between April 12, 2012 and April 17, 2012. Affected products are imprinted with universal product code 632474929022 and all originated from production lot code 161104, which is laser imprinted, along with the 4/14 best by date, on the back of each individual package.
