Bear Cat log splitters recalled due to injury hazard

Posted on May 30, 2012

At the request of the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, Crary Industries Incorporated has issued a voluntary recall for an estimated 120 of its ECHO Bear Cat log splitters, due to a potential defect that could pose an injury hazard to consumers. The hydraulic cylinder end cap of certain ECHO Bear Cat log splitters can become detached from the log splitter’s body, creating an impact injury hazard to users and people in the log splitters immediate vicinity. Crary Industries Incorporated, headquartered in West Fargo, North Dakota, has issued this recall in response to at least three consumer complaints reporting end cap detachment incidents, including an incident resulting in an injury caused by a detached end cap hitting a person in the head during routine use. The log splitter affected by this recall is the black and orange ECHO Bear Cat brand hydraulic log splitter model number LS27270 or LS27270T (which can be found on the log splitter’s main beam). The date code 012908 is imprinted on the log splitter’s hydraulic cylinder. These log splitters were available for purchase at authorized ECHO Bear Cat dealers throughout the United States between October of 2007 and March of 2012 for about $2,600. Consumers in possession of log splitters affected by this recall should discontinue their use immediately and return them to an authorized Echo dealership, where the defective end cap will be replaced at no additional cost.
