The Astra Daihatsu Motor company, a licensed distributor of vehicles produced by the Daihatsu Motor Company, has issued a voluntary recall for more than 50,000 Daihatsu Sirion and Gran Max vehicles due to a possible fracture in the bottom of the Gran Max’s spare tire compartment, and the Sirion’s potential for causing water damage to the vehicles’ steering rack by allowing water run off from the vehicle’s drainage hose to drip onto the steering rack. The Sirion’s steering rack may become rusted over time, hindering the driver’s ability to control the vehicle and increasing the likelihood that the vehicle will become involved in a traffic collision that could result in serious injury or death. The Gran Max’s spare tire compartment may become lose with prolonged routine use on rough surface roads, endangering the safety of the driver and any passengers in the vehicle. The recall affects more than 3,200 Sirion passenger vehicles manufactured from January of 2008 to March of 2011, as well as nearly 37,000 Gran Max pickup trucks manufactured from January of 2007 to October of 2008, and more than 11,000 Gran Max vans and minibuses manufactured from January of 2007 to October of 2008. This recall, scheduled to be in effect until May 28 of next year, has been issued in response to the unfavorable results of quality assurance testing conducted by the Daihatsu Motor Company. Vehicles returned for repairs after the recall deadline will still be repaired at no cost to the consumer, according to company representatives.
