Navistar incorporated, in response to a request from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has issued a voluntary recall for more than 230 of its International Terrastar trucks. These vehicles, manufactured between August 2011 and November 2011, have been equipped with a Sheppard M83 Steering Gear. These gears, bearing feature code 05PSN, may have been improperly constructed, putting the consumer at potential risk. The component attaching the steering gear shift to the Pitman arm may have been secured too tightly during installation. The steering gear’s security bolt may fail as a result, potentially causing a loss of steering control and increasing the danger of a collision that could result in injury or death.
Navistar is scheduled to begin notifying owners affected by the recall about the potential safety hazard in the next few months. Consumers will be able to return affected International Terrastar trucks to authorized dealerships where the Sheppard M83 Steering Gear’s Pitman Arm fasteners will be replaced free of charge.
