Canada airs graphic motorcycle safety ad

Posted on April 26, 2012

In an effort to convince motorcyclists to adopt safer behavior on the roadways, Canada’s Transport Accident Commission has launched an advertising campaign warning of the dangers of unsafe motorcycle behavior. The television advertisement features a graphic depiction of a high speed motorcycle collision that results in the rider’s neck being broken when his bike crashes into another vehicle.

In Victoria, one of the locations in which the ad will air, 17 motorcyclists have been killed in fatal traffic collisions. According to representatives from the Transport Accident Commission, the ad’s graphic depiction is intended to give motorcyclists a clear image of the consequences of unsafe behavior when controlling a motorcycle. According to the commission, violating speed regulations is the primary unsafe behavior motorcyclists engage in that results in a collision. If motorcyclists and motorists would slow down to obey the speed limit, the commission’s spokesperson said, the roads would be safer for everyone. Motorcycles make up four percent of all registered motor vehicles in the country, but 20 percent of all no fault accident claims involve motorcycles, costing the state approximately $100 million over the past three years.
