Trailer grain hoppers recalled due to safety violation

Posted on April 11, 2012

Davis Equipment Corporation has issued a voluntary recall for 25 of its Merrit Commodity Trailer 38 inch Grain Hoppers due to their failure to meet federal safety guidelines regulating rear impact protection. These vehicles, manufactured and distributed during model years 2008 through 2011, are equipped with a conveyor belt that extends from the trailer’s rear into the rear impact zone of the vehicle’s rear wheels. In the event of a rear collision, the occupants of the vehicle rear ending the trailer would collide with the vehicle’s conveyor belt before colliding with its rear bumper, possibly increasing the risk of injury or death. Davis Equipment will begin informing owners of the affected products of the safety risk and will begin correcting the situation by making the modifications necessary to bring the vehicle into compliance with federal standards at no cost to the consumer.

Consumers in search of more information on this and other vehicle recalls, can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety’s Vehicle Safety Hotline.  For inquiries regarding the Commodity Trailer 38 inch Grain Hopper recall, reference campaign identification number 12V150000.
