Canadian ground beef recalled due to E. coli

Posted on March 21, 2012

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has begun warning people to examine the products containing ground beef that are stored in their freezer in light of a nationwide recall of beef products due to E. coli contamination. The recall continues to expand to include an increasing amount of products. The affected ground meat is mostly found in frozen hamburger patties, but all affected products can be distinguished by their establishment number – 761 — and production date – from July 1, 2011 and February 15, 2012.

Consumers in possession of the affected beef products should immediately discontinue their use. The recall began several weeks ago, but it has now expanded to encapsulate about 135 separate ground beef products and multiple brands including President’s Choice, Keg, Maple Lodge Farms, Country Morning Gold, Exclusive Selections, Irresistibles, Grillhouse, Calgary Stampede, Licks and Best Value. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency began investigating beef products after a consumer complained of becoming ill from consuming E. Coli tainted meat.

Potentially affected products were distributed to hospitals, restaurants, retail stores, and other establishments across the country from a hamburger plant in Saskatoon. The plant is run by New Food Classics, which claims to supply half of the frozen ground beef patties sold in Canadian supermarkets. Thought the New Classics brand name does not often appear on products, the establishment number will distinguish the potentially tainted meat.

As a San Diego personal injury lawyer, I hope this product recall is early enough to prevent any further harm. If you or someone you know has been damaged by a defective product, please consider contacting a San Jose personal injury attorney.
