MIT Algorithm Predicts Red-Light Violators

According to news sources, a new study conducted by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has produced an algorithm that comes closer than any other algorithm currently available in predicting potential red light runners.

The algorithm essentially takes into consideration the different elements of potentially running through a red light such as deceleration, distance from the red light and the vehicles own speed. The result is a staggering accuracy in predicting red light runners, up to 85 percent. In contrast, current algorithms allow for only about 15-20 percent accuracy in prediction.

Coupled with ongoing advances in vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems such as those being developed by carmakers like BMW and Ford, the new algorithm in itself contributes to the future prospect of additional safety on the roadway.
