NHTSA Investigates Saturn Ion Steering Failure

Posted on October 3, 2011

The 2004-2007 Saturn Ion is under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects after receiving complaints of a loss of power steering assist, according to recent news sources.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received 846 complaints while General Motors received 3,489 reports of the same problem with the power steering assist. Consumers reported that it suddenly stopped working, causing a loss of control. Two owners reported that they were injured as a result, and 16 others reported that a crash occurred.

The Office of Defects has reported that the loss of power steering assist could contribute to a crash depending on driving conditions. They have ordered an engineering analysis to further evaluate the issue.
