Honda is recalling 1.5 million vehicles are being recalled due to an issue with the automatic transmission, report news sources.
The recall stems for possible damage that can occur to the secondary shaft bearing of the automatic transmission. If a driver shifts quickly between reverse, neutral, and drive (for example, when trying to dislodge a stuck vehicle from mud or snow) the bearing can be damaged. A damaged bearing can cause the vehicle to stall or make it become difficult to engage the parking gear. There have been no reports of injuries or deaths as a result of the problem.
The affected vehicles, which were sold in the United States, include the four-cylinder 2005 Accord, the 2007 to 2010 CR-V, and 2005 to 2008 Honda Element. Also subject to recall are 135,142 vehicles sold in Canada and 760,000 vehicles sold in China.
Consumers will be notified of the recall beginning August 31, at which point vehicle owners can take their vehicles to an authorized Honda dealer to have to issue addressed. The carmaker will update the software controlling the automatic transmission. This will smooth out the transition between gears, reducing the chance of damage.
