In a news release Friday, Fresh Food Concepts, Inc. announced that it is voluntarily recalling several guacamole-containing Layer Dip products due to the possibility that the avocado is tainted with Listeria monocytogenes.
The recall was spurred by a routine sampling program conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The sampling revealed that the avocado pulp used in the affected products was contaminated by the bacteria. Fresh Food Concepts has stopped using avocado from the supplier.
The dips, which were distributed nationwide and in Canada, include Fresh Food Concepts 5 Layer Dip, Delicioso 5 Layer Dip, Rojo’s Ultimate Layer Dip, Rojo’s Supreme 6 Layer Dip, Rojo’s 6 Layer Dip, and Signature Café 6 Layer Dip. The recalled products have use by dates of September 16, 2011 and earlier.
Anyone who has purchased the recalled dips are urged to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or destroy it.
Listeria infection can lead to serious, and in some cases fatal, illness, especially in elderly or frail people, children, and people with compromised immune systems. Symptoms include fever, headache, stiffness, abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea. Among pregnant women, Listeria infection can lead to stillbirths and miscarriages.
