Winn-Dixie Recalls Chocolate Drink Due to Undeclared Wheat

Posted on August 19, 2011

In a news release Tuesday, regional grocery retailer Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc., announced that it is voluntarily recalling a chocolate drink due to mislabeling that fails to disclose the possible presence of wheat protein, a known allergen, in the beverage.

Subject to recall is the Winn-Dixie Choco Charm Chocolate Drink, which comes in a one gallon (128 oz) clear plastic bottle with a yellow cap. The beverage has the UPC code 2114029830 and was sold in the dairy department of Winn-Dixie and SaveRite stores in Florida, George, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The Jacksonville, Fla-based grocery store chain says that it has received no reports of illness due to the consumption of the recalled beverage.

People with a wheat allergy or sensitivity can suffer a moderately acute allergic reaction. Winn-Dixie says it is working in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network.

I hope that no one has had an adverse reaction due to consuming the recalled chocolate beverage. As a Fresno personal injury lawyer, I encourage consumers with food allergies and sensitivities to stay safe and healthy by carefully reading product labels prior to purchase or consumption.
