As school starts back up and fall sports begin, emergency room doctors are advising coaches, students and parents to play it safe, as reported in a news article.
“Emergency physicians treat sports-related injuries in emergency departments every day and some of these injuries are very serious. It’s important to make sure that children follow the rules and play it safe and wear the appropriate safety gear,” said the president of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
According to the National Center for Sports Safety, injuries children receive from sports are behind 21 percent of traumatic brain injuries among kids in the U.S. Additionally, kids ages 5 to 14 make up 40 percent of injuries treated in emergencies room related to sports.
To decrease risk of injury while on the field, follow these safety tips:
- Wear the correct safety gear, such as helmets, pads for your knees and elbows, mouth guards, and any other gear that is required for the activity.
- Make sure safety equipment is the proper size and up to date with current safety standards.
- Practice skills. Knowing how to execute certain moves in specific sports can prevent straining your muscles or an injury.
- High temperatures can cause heat exhaustion and can lead to death. Make sure players are kept properly hydrated.
As a Los Angeles personal injury attorney, I hope that you and your loved ones have a great fall sports season. Please keep these tips in mind. My experience as a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer has shown me that safety should be a priority when it comes to our children.

Qualitest Pharmaceuticals has announced a voluntary recall of several lots of their birth control pills due to a packaging error, according to news sources.
Select pill packaging was rotated within the packaging to obscure the lot number and expiration date, as well as reversing the weekly tablet order. Consequently, the daily regimen for the pill could be inaccurate, leading to ineffectiveness of the contraceptive and possible unintentional pregnancies.

The National Fire Protection Association has issued a reports that names cooking fires as the leading cause of home fires and home fire related injuries.
An average of 2,650 people died between the years of 2005 and 2009 from home fires. Injuries averaged at 12,890. Cooking fires caused 40 percent of those fires.
The NFPA has provided the following safety tips to prevent cooking fires in your home:
- Don’t leave your kitchen while you’re cooking or while the stove is on.
- If you are baking, boiling or simmering food, check it frequently and do not leave the house.
- Make sure your stove top is free of materials that could easily catch fire.
If a fire does start:
- Keep a lid by your cooking area to stop a grease fire. In the event of such a fire, slide the lid over the fire and turn off the source of heat.
- If an oven fire begins, shut off the oven and keep the oven door closed.
- If a fire begins, don’t try to put it out yourself. Immediately call 9-1-1 and leave. Fifty-nine percent of non-fatal injuries happened when victims tried to manage the fire on their own.
As a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, consumer health and safety is something that I am invested in. Please keep these tips in mind when you’re cooking in your home. In my experience as a Los Angeles wrongful death attorney, I’ve seen many devastating accidents stem from fires that got out of control.

Hyundai Motors has announced a recall, in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, for two of their sport utility vehicles in regards to an airbag deployment issue, according to news sources.
The cars subject to recall are the Santa Fe and Veracruz 2007-2008 model years. The cars were manufactured from April 2006 to March 2008. About 205,233 cars are affected by this recall.
The issue is a problem with the safety system’s electrical circuit, which can deactivate the driver’s front airbag. If an airbag doesn’t deploy in the event of a collision, the risk of injury to the driver can be substantially increased.
Hyundai will contact owners this month to arrange a free repair of the system.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a warning to jewelry makers to limit cadmium in children’s jewelry, according to news reports.
The organization also granted a petition from consumer groups asking that the metal be banned unless a safe level can be determined.
The warning comes as government administration moves to limit the amount of regulation placed on small businesses in order to encourage employment.
Consumer groups have rallied against the use of cadmium, a toxic metal known to cause liver and kidney damge if eaten, in products, citing it as a “cheap, unregulated alternative to lead.”
Last year, Dress Barn, Inc. and Claire’s recalled jewelry that contained cadmium. McDonald’s recalled a glass collector cup they sold after it was found that cadmium was used in the paint.

BUI Natural Tofu has issued a recall for their salad rolls due to the presence of undeclared allergens, according to news sources.
Wheat and soy were found in products that did not reflect those ingredients on its label. The Department of Agriculture conducted the tests. Both soy and wheat are known to be common food allergens.
The products subject to recall are the Shrimp Salad Roll (UPC code 8-95467-00203-8) and the Vegetarian Salad Roll (UPC code 8-95467-00204-5). The salad rolls are marketed under the BUI “Fresh from the Bean” brand. The rolls are in trays wrapped with clear plastic.
Those who are allergic to wheat and/or soy should not consume the product in order to avoid triggering an allergic reaction. If you have purchased this product, you can return it to your store of purchase for a full refund.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is preparing a campaign that will educate toy makers about new rules regarding the safety of toys, according to news sources.
The new regulations were passed July 20 and will go into effect December 31, 2011. The rules require toy makers to certify their products were tested by a third-party lab that is CPSC accredited. A certificate will be required to be presented for each toy.
“Accrediting laboratories may not sound like much, but putting in place procedures that will require meaningful, independent third-party toy testing is a vital and necessary part of the process of providing parents with much greater peace of mind when standing in the toy store and when watching their children at play,” stated a CPSC chairman.
The commission has planned a three-stage education and outreach campaign, specifically targeting small businesses.
As a Los Angles personal injury lawyer, I’m happy to see stricter rules being imposed on manufacturers, especially when it involves children and their safety. My experience as a product liability lawyer has shown me that it is absolutely imperative that products for children be safe, and I think further testing will help ensure that no child is injured or killed by an unsafe product.

According to news sources, Select Brands, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, has issued a recall for their Chefmate 6-Speed Blender, sold at Target, due to a laceration hazard.
About 304,000 blenders were sold from September 2007 to February 2011 for about $14. While in use, the plastic pitcher has the potential to separate from the base of the blender, exposing the rotating blades. Target has received 11 different reports of this happening, seven in which serious injury occurred to the user’s hands.
The model subject to recall is the BL-10. Consumers can locate the model number on the base of the product. The blender base is white and six inches tall. Speed-selector buttons are labeled 1-5, and one is labeled “Pulse/Off”. The pitcher is clear plastic and includes measuring markings. The lid is white plastic with a removeable plastic stopper.
If you have one of these blenders in your possession, stop using it and return it to a Target store to receive a refund.

Synthetic stimulants which mimic the effects of LSD, cocaine, and MDMA drugs being marketed as bath salts and plant food are being banned by the Drug Enforcement Administration, according to news sources.
The DEA plans to use emergency scheduling authority to limit the production of these products, citing them as imminent hazards to the public.
An administrator stated,
“This action was necessary to protect the public from the imminent hazard posed by these dangerous chemicals. Except as authorized by law, this action will make possessing and selling these chemicals or the products that contain them illegal in the U.S. for at least one year while the DEA and the United States Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) further study whether these chemicals should be permanently controlled.”
These products are sold in retail outlets, headshops, and on the Internet, labeled with names such as Bliss, Ivory Wave, Purple Wave, or Vanilla Sky. The products have not been approved by the FDA and manufacturing is not monitored.
Mephedrone, methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) and Methylone are the three synthetic stimulants that will be illegal under the ban. They are already banned in several other countries, but in the United States they are not a federally controlled substance, which made it legal to buy and sell. Side effects of using these products include impaired perception, reduced motor activity control, extreme paranoia, episodes of violence, and paranoia.
As a product liability lawyer, I’m glad to see the DEA taking action on these extremely dangerous products. When used for something they’re not intended for, products can pose danger to consumers. As a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, I hope you visit this blog often to keep informed about new dangers to your health from consumer products.

LG Electronics, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, is reannouncing a recall of dehumidifiers that have been linkedto one million dollars in property damage, according to news sources.
The dehumidifiers were first recalled in December 2009, after 11 reports were filed, four of which were serious fires. Only 2 percent of the 98,000 dehumdifiers sold were returned, meaning many consumers and their homes are still in danger. Sixteen additional reports have been filed since the initial recall, nine of which were seious fires. No serious injuries have occurred, but significant damages has been cause by the fires in several homes.
The original recall included 30 pint portable dehumidifiers of the Goldstar or Comfort-Aire brand. The product can short circuit, which poses fire and burn hazards, and has the potential to cause a serious fire. This product was sold at Home Depot, Walmart, Ace Hardware, Do It Best, Orgill Inc., among other retailers around the U.S. from January 2007 to June 2008 for about $140 to $150.
If you have one of these dehumidifiers, stop using it right away and unplug it. Consumers can contact LG for a free repair. Serial numbers of the affected models can be found here.
