Contaminated batches of L-Tryptophan were later discovered to cause eosinophilia myalgia syndrome, which caused 37 deaths and more than 1,500 permanent disabilities. Over 1,100 lawsuits are pending against the supplement’s manufacturers.

Panish has also served on the plaintiffs’ executive committee for lawsuits in California over diet drug fen-phen, which the FDA asked manufacturers to withdraw from the market when it was discovered to cause permanent heart valve damage.
