Motor vehicle collisions are a leading cause of death in the United States, with pedestrians and bicyclists the most vulnerable users of the road. Young children are particularly at risk as they travel to and from school. In an effort to bring awareness to the dangers surrounding school zones in California, Panish | Shea | Ravipudi LLP collaborated with 1Point21 Interactive to analyze over 400,000 collision records from 2015 provided by the California Highway Patrol’s SWITRS database and released the “Most Dangerous Elementary School Zones in California” study.
Of the 468 dangerous school zones in California, Los Angeles Unified and Glendale Unified ranked second and third, respectively, with the most accidents per elementary school in districts with more than 20 schools.
As a father himself, school zone safety is important to firm partner Rahul Ravipudi who sat down with CBS 2 Los Angeles to discuss the study and how, in order to see improvements, parents need to get active and insist on safer school zones for their children. “I don’t want anything happening to my children; I don’t want anything happening to anybody’s children,” Mr. Ravipudi said. “We’re trying to take things to the next level and trying to make sure that this place is safer.”
