Brake pump failure prompts Big Tex trailer recall

Posted on April 19, 2012

Big Tex Trailer Manufacturing Incorporated, in response to a request from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has issued a voluntary recall for 20 of its trailers due to a potential risk for brake failure. The trailers affected by this recall are model year 2012 Big Tex 22GN and Big Tex 25GN. The Dexter Axle electric hydraulic brake actuator pump in 20 of these trailer models may have been insufficiently heat treated, which can lead to the pumps becoming degraded prematurely from routine wear and tear of some mechanisms necessary for the effective operation of the trailer’s brakes. If the electric hydraulic brake actuator pump fails, the trailer’s brakes may unexpectedly cease to function, increasing the risk that the vehicle hauling it could become involved in a collision leading to injury or death. Consumers who have purchased trailers affected by this recall can contact the manufacturer. Dexter Axles will replace defective electric hydraulic brake actuator pumps at no cost to the trailer’s owner. Consumers seeking more information about this recall can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline, referencing campaign identification number 12V168000 and action number EQ12003.

As a San Diego personal injury attorney, I hope this recall is effectively carried out without causing injury to anyone. If you have been injured in a collision, please consider contacting a car accident attorney in San Diego.
