After the U.S. Department of Agriculture found Queso Fresco Casero Fresh Cheese to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, Del Bueno, the manufacturer, is conducting a recall, according to a news release.
The product affected are all 16 ounce packages of the cheese with a stamp of Sept 14, 2011. The cheese comes in round, plastic, clear containers. The product was sold in Washington and at the Pasco, WA flea market.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause life-threatening illness. Although healthy individuals usual just experience symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, the infection can be fatal in individuals such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. Women who are pregnant often experience still-births or miscarriages as a result of being infected.
